Florida Syrups took a different approach.

We have never used glycerol in our home slush range. Instead, we developed a system based on a Core Mix and separate Flavour Shot, so customers can make frozen drinks at home without relying on that ingredient.

That decision reflects current Food Standards Agency guidance, parent and customer concerns, and our own product-development preferences.

What Is Glycerol Used for in Slush Drinks?

Glycerol, also known as glycerine or E422, is sometimes added to slush drinks because it helps prevent the liquid from freezing into a solid block.

From a technical point of view, it can be useful for maintaining a soft frozen texture.

However, intake matters, particularly for younger children.

What Does the Food Standards Agency Say?

Current Food Standards Agency guidance advises that children under seven should not consume slush drinks containing glycerol.

It also advises that children under 10 should have no more than one 350ml serving per day where the drink contains it.

The guidance is relevant to both commercial slush drinks and home slush products where the ingredient is present.

Has Florida Syrups Ever Used glycerol?

No.

Florida Syrups has never used glycerol in its home slush products.

So this is not a case of removing it from an old recipe. Our range was developed as a different type of system from the outset.

Why Did We Choose a Different Approach to glycerol?

There was no single reason.

Our decision was influenced by:

• current FSA guidance
• parent and customer concerns
• the fact that children often drink slush
• our preference for a different freezing system
• a desire to make the formulation easy for customers to understand

For us, it made more sense to develop a home slush range that did not depend on this additive.

How Does the Florida Syrups System Work?

Florida Syrups uses a Core Mix and separate Flavour Shot system.

The two parts perform different jobs.

The Flavour Shot provides the taste.

The Core Mix contains the sugar needed to help the drink freeze into the correct slush consistency.

The Flavour Shots themselves do not contain sugar.

This means we can offer a wide range of flavours while keeping the same basic freezing system.

Why Does the Core Mix Contain Sugar?

Sugar affects the freezing point of water.

That means the correct sugar balance helps a slush mixture remain partially frozen rather than turning into a solid block.

In our system, that function comes from the Core Mix.

This is also why following the recommended quantities matters. Changing the ratio too much can affect both the texture and the flavour of the finished drink.

Does a Different Formulation Mean Mixing Instructions Matter Less?

No.

A home slush machine still needs the right balance of ingredients to freeze correctly.

Too much or too little Core Mix, flavour or water can affect the finished texture.

For consistent results, measure the ingredients accurately and follow the current product instructions.

Why Is This Important for Families?

Slush drinks are popular with children, so the current FSA guidance is particularly relevant to parents and families.

Because Florida Syrups home slush products do not use glycerol, customers have a clear answer when they want to know whether it is present in the range.

That makes the product formulation easier to understand when choosing drinks for use at home.

Does Glycerol-Free Mean Sugar-Free?

No.

These are two separate things.

The Flavour Shots do not contain sugar, but the Core Mix does.

That sugar plays an important role in the freezing process.

So a glycerol-free slush is not automatically a sugar-free slush.
