This change comes in response to recent reports and growing concerns around the use of glycerol (also known as E422) in frozen drinks, particularly when consumed in large quantities by children.
🚫 What Is Glycerol, and Why Is It Used?
Glycerol is a colourless, odourless liquid used in some food and drink products to improve texture or lower the freezing point—commonly used in slush syrups to keep the ice soft. However, excessive consumption can lead to side effects such as nausea, headaches, dehydration, and in some cases, more serious health concerns.
⚠️ What the FSA Says About Glycerol
In July 2023, the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a safety warning regarding the consumption of glycerol in slush ice drinks, especially by children. According to the FSA:
“Children under four should not be served slush-ice drinks containing glycerol, and older children should be limited to one per day.”

The FSA’s review concluded that too much glycerol can cause adverse health effects and advised manufacturers and retailers to take precautions.
